LTC Joseph H. Johnson III

AFNORTH Commander

Lieutenant Colonel Johnson is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. He enlisted in the United States Army Reserves in March of 2000 and received his commission in the Adjutant General Corps through Army ROTC at Louisiana State University in December 2004.

After completion of the Adjutant General Officer Basic Course, he was assigned as the Special Troops Battalion S1 for 377th Theater Sustainment Command in New Orleans, LA. His subsequent assignments include: Regimental Adjutant, and Deputy Regimental S1, 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment and Squadron S1, 4/3 ACR, where he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom; Instructor/Writer and HHC Commander, Adjutant General School, Soldier Support Institute, Fort Jackson, SC; Alpha Company Commander and Battalion Executive Officer, Allied Forces North Battalion; Brigade S1, 3ID Sustainment Brigade where he deployed in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel in Afghanistan; 3ID Secretary of General Staff; Command Strength Manager and Chief of Technology Talent Management for U.S. Army Futures Command, Austin, TX, and most recently Chief of Army Officer Accessions, Directorate of Military Personnel Management, HQDA G-1.

Lieutenant Colonel Johnson’s civilian education includes a master’s degree in Business Administration from Webster University, and a bachelor’s degree in Criminology from Louisiana State University. He is a military graduate of the Adjutant General Officer Basic Course, the Adjutant General Captain’s Career Course, Command and General Staff College, Brigade S1 Operations Course, Defense Support of Civil Authorities Course, Total Army Instructor Training Course, and Command courses.

Lieutenant Colonel Johnson’s military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3OLC), Army Commendation Medal (3OLC), Army Achievement Medal (1OLC), National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Global War of Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, the NATO Medal, unit medals, the Combat Action Badge, and 2013 Adjutant General Officer of the Year award.

Lieutenant Colonel Johnson is married and has three children.
